Every person has a kind of genius. Sadly,many”geniuses” (instances of genius) appear as awkward, difficult, or maybe socially uncomfortable. This is mostly about other people, but unfortunately it means that many instances of genius get diminished and suppressed, put down or put away.
This past week on my annual retreat, I overheard my new friend Andrei saying he is “OCD” about many things, meaning he takes a highly structured approach to those things, and he won’t settle for anything less than excellence.
Andrei was our surf instructor, a yoga instructor, and organized the retreat logistics like a ninja. I learned after the retreat that he was a “chubby teen”, and he is now a totally buff 29 year-old because of that structure and focus.
I suggested to Andrei that using the term OCD is minimizing something about him that is both unique and effective. Perhaps rather than joking about being OCD, he couldtalk about himself as highly structured about certain things.
His eyes immediately litup. He had been minimizing his genius and joking about it as a disorder. I expect that others had given him grief at times about his structured nature, so Andrei learned to mininmize it, but it is still part of him. All I did was to name a part of his genius, and his heart smiled in response.
Is there something about youthat can be annoying to others, so that you minimize when you talk about it? I bet that if you look inside of that, you’ll find a hint about your own genius.
Do yourself a favor. Write about it in a journal, or speak it outloud. Try naming it asyour genius. Start by doing this just to yourself, and see how it feels. See how it serves you and others.
